Building Collapse at Begunbari Dhaka

Death toll at Begunbari building collapse in Dhaka, Bangladesh rises to 23, according to the Daily Star news.

Rescue workers yesterday pulled 19 more bodies from the rubble of a five-storey building in the capital's Begunbari area, taking the death toll to 23. Eight women and four children were among the dead, said rescuers.

The structure, which was built on columns on the edge of a canal, toppled over late Tuesday, flattening three flimsy homes where scores of low-paid garment workers and labourers lived.

“People sleeping inside the shanties and in the building didn't have time to escape,” said Dhaka city official Muhibul Haque, adding that the building collapsed in a matter of minutes.

The army and the fire department used earth-moving equipment in the rescue operation, with some people believed to be trapped under the debris.
