Implement increased wage with retrospective effect: RMG leaders

The Garment Sramik Trade Union Centre on Friday demanded immediate implementation of the increased wages for apparel workers with retrospective effect from August instead of November.

Leaders of the organisation at a rally in front of the National Press Club also demanded review of the new wage structure, fixing Tk 5,000 minimum wage and immediate release of the its leaders Tuhin Choudhury and Masum Hossain.

‘The prime minister in May declared that the apparel workers would get their increased wages and bonus before Eid-ul-Fitr and on July 20 also said that the wages that the apparel workers get is inhumane,’ said the centre general secretary, Ruhul Amin, adding that the increased wage implementation from November was straightway violation of the PM’s announcement.

None can survive with Tk 3000 as minimum wage declared for the apparel workers as minimum wage in Dhaka and its adjacent areas, he said, urging the government to re-evaluate the wage and make it at least Tk 5,000 a month, considering the price of daily commodities.

He alleged that by declaring to make wage implementation effective from November, the government has fulfilled the aspiration of the factory owners, ignoring the interests of around 40 lakh apparel workers.

The centre adviser, Montu Ghosh, alleged that the factory owners were plotting not to pay the increased wages and the garment factory owners’ muscle men and police have been harassing the labourers and their leaders presently.

Centre leader of the organisation Sadequr Rahman Shaheen chaired the rally.
Earlier, the participants of the rally brought out a procession from Muktangan and it ended in front of the National Press Club.
