A delegation of BGMEA led by its president Abdus Salam Murshedy made the plea when it called on Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni at her office here on Sunday, a BGMEA press release said here today.
During the meeting, the BGMEA leaders also requested the foreign minister to take steps for increasing quota of exporting RMG products to India as well as reducing the number of garment items from the negative list of South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA).
They also urged the government to take proper measures for reducing import duties on RMG in South Africa, Brazil and Mexico as well as opening Bangladesh mission and commercial wing in Latin America.
The RMG industry owners said the local entrepreneurs have flourished the RMG sector by investing corers of Taka as well as building skilled workforce. At the moment it is not desirable that foreign companies would reap the benefits from the local entrepreneurs' efforts by investing in the RMG sector here, they added.
They requested the foreign minister not to allow any joint or 100 percent foreign investment in the RMG sector.
The BGMEA leaders opined that the RMG sector would benefit if the foreign investors come up with an idea of building textile mills here.
Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni gave them a patient hearing and assured them of considering the proposals of BGMEA.
