Leaders of the organisation at a briefing at Mukti Bhaban said Eid-ul-Azha would be celebrated after about 10 days but the timely payment of festival allowance of the garment workers was still uncertain.
In many factories, the management compelled the workers to work overtime an hour or two without getting paid on the excuse of the new wage structure implementation.
The government announced the new wage structure for apparel workers in July and it is supposed to be implemented from November.
The organisation’s general secretary KM Ruhul Amin demanded release of its leaders Ali Reza Chowdhury Tuhin and Masum Hossain who were detained during the July movement that sought an increase in wages, withdrawal of cases filed against leaders such as Montu Ghosh, cancellation of the newly formed industrial police and establishment of trade unionism in apparel factories.
The labour leaders alleged that in some factories the owners proposed to give for each worker Tk 500 to Tk 700 in festival allowance.
They demanded that BGMEA leaders should take back the remark that 60 per cent of the factories had no capacity to implement the new wage structure. The labour leaders termed the remark untrue and swiping.
The adviser to the organisation, Montu Ghosh and the president, Idris Ali, Sadequr Raman Shamim and others attended the briefing.
The National Garment Workers Federation formed a human chain in front of the National Press Club demanding implementation of the new wage structure.
