The volume of exports in the ready-made garments (RMG) sector would likely double in the current year, as the European Union has relaxed the Rules of Origin since January 1.
This was opined by Nasiruddin Chowdhury, the first senior-vice president of Bangladesh Ready-made Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), in a press conference held yesterday afternoon, at a local hotel, in connection with the three-day-long 9th Fair of Chittagong Apparel, Fabric and Accessories Exposition-2011 (CAFAXPO-2011), which will start today at the Chittagong Jila Krira Sangsad (CJKS) auditorium.
Nasiruddin Chowdhury said that ready-made garments exports are on the rise, as sector players are now expanding into countries of Latin America, Japan, India and Turkey.
He said that the global RMG market is now worth USD 400 billion. Moreover, he added, the global RMG market is growing at 11 per cent per year. But, he regretted that the market share cornered by Bangladesh, in such a booming sector, is still a mere 4 per cent. He hoped that the volume of exports would increase, for the greater interest of the country.
Nasiruddin Chowdhury placed several proposals to the government to boost the RMG sector, that provides jobs to 300,000 workers, in 619 units situated in Chittagong.
He claimed that a lot of industries in the commercial capital are suffering due to shortage of power and gas. He demanded uninterrupted supply of gas to the newly installed units, to help encourage investment. He also demanded the introduction of more international flights through the Chittagong Airport. He also stressed on the need for construction of more five-star hotels in Chittagong.
Nasiruddin Chowdhury also appealed to the government to keep the existing productivity uninterrupted, at Chittagong Port, the economic lifeline of the country.
LGRD minister Ashraful Islam will attend the inaugural ceremony of CAFAXPO-2011, as the chief guest. The expo will conclude on January 22.
Former commerce minister, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, will remain present as the chief guest at the concluding session.
Nasiruddin Chowdhury disclosed that steps taken by the RMG players include the setting up of BGMEA Institute of fashion and Technology, BGMEA hospital, introduction of group insurance for workers, education scholarships, and organisation of workers' fair.
