Quality management system vital for product quality

Industrial productivity of the country would increased significantly if effective quality management system is ensured, Industries Minister Dilip Barua said at a workshop in Dhaka yesterday.

The government is working to transform the country’s economy into a knowledge-based one through industrialisation and for this purpose quality management system is a prerequisite, said the minister in his chief guest’s speech.

“In order to materialise the dream into a reality it is required to ensure trained, efficient and skilled human resources on quality management system”, Barua said.

United Nations Industrial Develop-ment Organisation (UNIDO) organised the workshop: ‘Implementation of ISO 9001 Quality Management System in Asian Developing Countries’.
The minister also hoped that the workshop would contribute in imple-menting quality management system ISO 9000 in industries and service sectors.

Industries Secretary KH Masud Siddiqui said the industrial sector of the country should meet the challenge of maintaining products quality by ensuring ISO 9000 standard level.
Chairman of Bangladesh Acc-reditation Board (BAB) Advocate Moinuddin Miazee said many certification bodies had mushroomed in recent years, weakening the quality management system in the country.

He urged that the government strengthen BAB to address the existing challenges related to accreditation activities.

BAB Director General Abu Abdullah and Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution Director Dr Syed Humayun Kabir also spoke at the opening session of the function chaired by BSTI Director General AK Fazlul Ahad. UNIDO Lead Consultant Dr Nigel H Croft presented the keynote paper.
