8 Textile and Fashion Institutes Approved

Eight textiles and fashion designing institutes and training centres will be established throughout the country. On Tuesday, a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved two such proposals worth Tk 1.63 billion have been approved for the purpose.

Planning minister AK Khandker told reporters, "The government intends to upgrade the apparel sector as our readymade garments are exported throughout the world." Four fashion designing and training institutes and four textile institutes will be established said the minister.

One fashion design and training institute will be set up in Dhaka and one each in Kumarkhali of Kushtia, Kalihaati of Tangail, and Belkuchi of Sirajganj under the apparel and jute ministry proposal.
Of the Tk 360 million project, Japan Debt Cancellation Centre will fund Tk 350 million and the government will bear Tk 10 million.

Four textile institutions under apparel and jute ministry will be established in Rangunia, Chittagong; Khalishpur, Khulna; and Natore.

Government will bear the entire cost (Tk 1.27 billion) cost of the project.

Both the proposals will be implemented by 2013, said Khandker.

The ECNEC meeting also approved seven other proposals worth Tk 21.69 billion which includes 'Rural Electrification Extension: Khulna Division Programme-1' worth Tk 3.93 billion under the power ministry; 'Youth Training Centres Establishment Programme in Remaining Eleven Districts' worth Tk 1.46 billion under the youth and sports ministry; 'Rehabilitation and Modernisation programme of Unit 1& 2 at Ghorashal Power Plant' worth Tk 2.53 billion under the power ministry; and 'Repair and Modernisation (amended) Programme of Chittagong Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Preparation of ICC World Cup 2011' worth Tk 710 million under youth and sports ministry.
