Army to quit Ctg Port after normalcy returns

Although the port activities are becoming normal gradually from Wednesday last, it will take 35 to 40 days more to free the port from congestion. Port users said more than a month will require for full normal handling activities in bulk and container cargos.

Following a week of unrest, the port authorities now face congestion of ships. To normalise the port situation 246 army personnel have been deployed on 13 vulnerable points of the port from Wednesday. Following the failure of meetings by Shipping Minister Md. Shahjahan Khan with the port workers, the government was compelled to deploy the army personnel along with imposition of Section 144 to make port operation normal.

The port authorities at a press conference at Bandar Bhaban yesterday afternoon said, The army personnel would be withdrawn soon after the port situation became normal.

Army coordination officer of the port Security Cell Major Shahriar Morshed said port activities to got momentum, as soon as the peaceful situation would prevail, and the army personnel would be withdrawn.

Port secretary said during last 24 hours, 4098 TEUS containers were handled in the port and 79 vessels now were waiting to berth including 53 vessels in outer berth.
