Chittagong port efficiency has more than doubled suddenly. "The average porting time in September was seven days. Currently the time has reduced to two to three days," port secretary Syed Farhad Uddin told reporters in a press conference in "Bandar Bhaban" on Saturday.
Facilities including ID cards will be implemented within a few days while a 30 bed mobile hospital under a joint effort of the port authority and the military is set to be launched to meet the workers' longstanding demand for healthcare, he said.
On Oct 12, clashes between the police and the workers, and a following strike demanding ID cards and health care facilities among other things, caused the authorities to deploy army.
"The port has regained normalcy. We are investigating the cause of tension. We're also talking to the stevedores. We are working towards a permanent solution," Major Mohammad Shahrier Hosssain, coordinator for the army cell, told the press.
The secretary said that as of Saturday noon 86 ships, of which 27 were carrying food grain are anchored just outside, but there are no container ships. Eight ships are in queue to enter the jetties, one of which is a container ship. The rest of the ships are unloading through lighterage vessels. The secretary told the press that 10 jetties were operating on Saturday.
