Apparel Export to Turkey Grows

Map: Turkey

Turkey has been emerging as a prospective clothing market for Bangladesh, with apparel exports to the Eurasian country logging significant growth. In 2009-10 fiscal year, Bangladesh exported apparel items worth US $ 108 million to Turkey, which is 65 per cent higher compared to that of the previous fiscal.

A recently conducted study suggests that Turkey could be the largest apparels market for Bangladesh outside its traditional markets due to emergency of the former as a significant economic power.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) in cooperation with Promotion of Social and Environmental Standards in the Industry (PSES), a project supported by Garman International Cooperation (GIZ) on behalf of the German federal ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), has conducted the study.

Turkey’s import of ready-made garment products has increased about 141 per cent in last eight years to $1.23 billion in 2008 from $ 113 million in 2001, the study said.

Bangladesh accounts for 13.8 per cent of Turkey’s RMG products import while it was only 0.2 per cent eight years ago.

Chan’s market share in Turkey has been gradually overtaken by other major apparels exporters like Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam.

The present line of products Bangladesh exports to Turkey includes cotton shirts, man-made fibers shirts, blouses, swimwear, trousers, shorts and overcoats, including others.

A total of 16 out of top 20 apparel products of Bangladesh are competitive in the Turkish market. Besides, 13 of these 20 products have comparative advantage (RCA) over products of major supplying countries including China, Vietnam and India, the study revealed.
