The ready-made garment (RMG) sector of the country has been operating with a 25 per cent shortage of manpower, said a leader of the top export earning sector.
In this regard he also sought training support from overseas countries and development partners to groom human resources to cater for the need.
“Currently we have a 25 per cent shortage of the total labour requirement for the RMG sector,” Abdus Salam Murshedy, president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said yesterday in Dhaka.
He was speaking at the publication ceremony of a study titled ‘Market Access Guide to the New and Emerging Markets’ at BGMEA conference room.
BGMEA in cooperation with Promotion of Social and Environmental Standards in the Industry (PSES), a project supported by Garman International Cooperation (GIZ) on behalf of the German federal ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), has conducted the study to identify potential new and emerging markets for woven apparels of the country.
Dr Khondaker Golam Moazzem, senior research fellow of the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) together with Sayed Azim, strategy consultant, and Miran Ali, managing director of Misami Garments Ltd, jointly carried out the study. The study was published as a book.
At the function the BGMEA President sought financial and technical support from Germany to train up about 300,000 new skilled workers for the sector each year.
About the study, he said the market access guide will contribute much to draw buyers’ attention for the high-end products of the RMG sector.
He also thanked the Germany as well as European Union countries for their continuous support for the development of the RMG sector.
“If we get policy support from the government, the present growth rate in the RMG sector will continue at least for next 10 years,” he told the function.
Garman Ambassador to Bangladesh Hogler Michael was present at the ceremony as chief guest while BGMEA vice-president Faruque Hassan, GIZ Programme Co-coordinator Dietrich Stotz and representative of GIZ also attended the function.
The German envoy said there has been a fantastic bilateral relationship between Bangladesh and Germany for long while it gathered further momentum recently. “We hope the cooperation and bilateral relations will expand further in future,” he said.
He assured that the German government would continue providing technical and equipment support for further expansion of the RMG sector.
Dietrich Stotz said their main aim is to make BGMEA a well equipped organisation and provide it with other necessary supports. He also urged to diversify the export markets of RMG products to mitigate its future risks.
Describing the book’s details, GIZ executive Sarwat Ahmed said currently 94 per cent of Bangladeshi garment products find their markets in three destinations—the United States, EU and Canada. She also emphasised on market diversification for RMG products.
She said the seven new and emerging markets including Turkey, South Africa, Mexico, Brazil, South Korea and Australia might be the best alternatives.
