Participants in fifteen countries have registered their Fairtrade Breakfasts: Austria, Brazil, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Martinique, Nicaragua, Poland, Spain, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Large public breakfasts are planned in 63 cities including Paris, Madrid, Prague and Cape Town. Organizers expect 900 individual events in total.
“We are very happy that so many people are participating in Fairtrade Breakfasts. This support means real change for the producer communities with whom we work. This is a good reason to celebrate!” says Marjorye Mejia S, General Secretary of CLAC, the network of small-scale Fairtrade producers in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Fairtrade Breakfasts include such products as Fairtrade certified coffee, tea, sugar, juice, jams, fruit, chocolate spread and honey. These product sales mean significant additional income to disadvantaged farmers and workers – Fairtrade producers are paid a Fairtrade Premium for community investment and at least a Minimum Price. The Breakfasts will also promote Fairtrade to new consumer audiences.
The Fairtrade Breakfast campaign is a joint initiative of Max Havelaar France, Max Havelaar Switzerland and TransFair Germany, with participation by Fairtrade Foundation UK, Asociación del Sello de Comercio Justo Spain, Fairtrade Mark Ireland, Fairtrade Label South Africa, Czech Fair Trade Association, Europe-Korea Foundation, Coalition for Fair Trade Poland and Brazil, and support from Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO). Events will be held until May 23rd.
