Garment Units Reopen Wednesday in Ashulia

BGMEA and Garment factory owners have decided to reopen all units in Ashulia from Wednesday (June 23, 2010) morning after one day's closure.

Abdus Salam Murshedy, president of BGMEA, the garment factory owners association, told the news service that the decision had come in a closed-door meeting of the BGMEA on Tuesday evening.

The meeting of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) was still underway at 8pm after severe clashes between RMG workers and police in Ashulia earlier in the day left over 100 injured.

The workers have been demanding a monthly minimum wage of Tk 5,000 (~ $71) for long, but the owners offered the workers only Tk 1,887.

Their current minimum wage of Tk 1,662.50 (~ $24) was fixed in 2006 after over a decade.
