Owners to Show More Sympathy to Workers - Prime Minister Urges

Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina on June 03, 2010, Wednesday urged industrialists to be more sympathetic towards the workers in their industries for paying their wages, reports UNB.

"I will urge the owners to show more sympathy to the workers while paying their wages and to please consider inflation and other such factors during the calculation of the wages," she said during the PM's question and answer session in the House.

She said that it was not always true that the workers are involved in destructive activities in the factories. "Often the outsiders are involved in destructive activities in industries," she said pointing to the garment factory destruction various times.

She said that an 18-member committee has been formed to modernize and update the Labour Policy 2010.

In the meantime, this committee has formed an 8-member working cell to formulate Labour Policy quickly. "This working cell held 8 meetings and then submitted their draft policy," she said.

"After getting the remarks the draft policy would be sent to the cabinet division to finalise the policy," she said.

She mentioned that in the draft Labour Policy 2010, the spotlight has been thrown on 26 issues including fare wages, social safety net, skill development, employment and guarantee for job.

Hasina said that the labour policy had been formulated in line with Vision 2021, where there will be no wages discrimination between male and female workers and the welfare of the expatriate workers will be included.
