Import procurement from Bangladesh of the world’s fourth largest economy rebounded as German apparel importers are increasing their orders while many new buyers from that country are flocking to the market here, industry observers said.
They point out that Bangladeshi apparel industry has got a new identity as a reliable supplier of the high value apparels, so sales in Germany should increase much in the near future.
Germany is the number one market for made-in-Bangladesh knitwear that makes major portion of the country’s apparel export earnings.
Officials of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association told New Age that apparel exports to Germany in July-September 2010 amounted $733 million, 29 percent more than the figure in the same period in 2009.
Readymade garments constituted 92 per cent of Bangladesh’s exports to Germany, Europe’s largest economy. The next significant exports to Germany are home textiles, footwear and frozen shrimps.
Exports of knitwear amounted $463 million, up 34 per cent year-on-year while shipments of woven or cut-and-sew garments increased by around 20 per cent to $216 million.
‘A common depression last year affected Bangladeshi exporters in the German market but we see the current year’s business will be very good,’ said one senior official of the BKMEA.
Bangladesh’s garment exports to Germany suffered a slightly negative year-on-year growth in the last fiscal year despite ending months of the year saw some rebounding exports.
‘We see more business opportunities for Bangladesh in Germany... a new identity of Bangladesh is being built up there,’ said, David Hasanat, chairman of the $150-million plus worth Viyellatex Group. ‘German brands, those having retail outlets across the world, are taking Bangladeshi manufacturers into confidence for making direct deals for sourcing high-value and fashion products.’
Hasanat’s company is a pioneer in the industry in supplying high-value wear to upmarket brands like Esprit, and s.Oliver and recently it inked deals with sportswear giant Adidas.
‘German brands have now direct deals with some Bangladeshi companies and they are searching more suppliers who are compliant and competent.’
A highly regarded entrepreneur in the industry, Hasanat sees that Bangladesh exports to Germany is set to be raised to the second level. ‘German brands and distributors will start procuring high-value apparels from Bangladesh, and hence its exports will get a quantum lift,’ says an upbeat Hasanat.
Anwar-Ul-Alam Chow-dhury Parvez, a former president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, hopes that woven wear shipments to Germany would also rise in the coming days.
‘Local production of premium denims is increasing and Bangladeshi jeans makers will be able to feed upmarket German brands soon,’ he said.
