Apparel Productivity: Worker-owner relations is desired

Country’s (Bangladesh) Ready Made Garments (RMG) sector can double its productivity and employ more 3.5 million people within next three years if a respectable worker-owner relationship can be ensured including new market exploration, workers’ representatives said yesterday.

Bangladeswh National Council (BNC) of Textile Garment and leather workers organised a press briefing yesterday clarifying their stance on the recent RMG unrest centering pay hike and some deadly accidents.

Development of a good image through dialogue and understanding is very crucial for the globally focused highest export earning sector to shun the path of vandalism, the workers’ leaders said in a written statement at the briefing.

They also placed a seven-point demand including safe working place, proper implementation of new wage board, proper investigation into the recent accidents in some garment factories and compensation for the affected families.

The also called for financial help from RMG buyers for the bereaved families of the deceased.
