BGMEA additional secretary Probir Kanti Das told BSS yesterday that the apparel expo would provide participants with a great opportunity not only to display the unique aspects of the recent development but also shed light on their progress.

He said the main objective of the fair is to encourage local and international entrepreneurs in the garment industry towards establishing backward linkage industries including fabrics and accessories in Chittagong encouraged by the country’s key sea port and international airport facilities.

There is no alternative to setting up backward linkage industries in the country to survive the competition in the present free trade economy, he said and added that the apparel expo is being organized to that end. The fair will bring a good number of leading industrial units under one roof resulting in business transaction worth crores of Taka.

Chittagong is the second largest readymade garment (RMG) hub next to Dhaka as the port city has now 764 export-oriented apparel industries both large and small. Around 3.5 million workers are now engaged in the country’s RMG sector fetching 13 billion US dollars annually to the national exchequer, BGMEA sources said.
