Apparel workers rally for wage increase in Ashulia

About 1700 workers of a sweater factory at Jamgora of Ashulia, Bangladesh went out on demonstrations on Sunday for wage increase. Two of the factory officials were injured in a clash at the time.

The factory management and the police said the workers of the Universe Knitting Wear Ltd. stopped working in the morning, demanding increase in their wages.

The authorities in the wage sheet for December, made available on Saturday, said they would pay Tk 41 to workers for the production of a piece of sweater and they demanded Tk 45.

As the workers tried to talk with the management, the officials rebuked the workers.

At one point, the works attacked factory officials Mohammad Hossain and Abbas Uddin. The injured were sent to hospital.

Ashulia police subinspector Billal Hossain that the workers had attacked some officials.

The management announced a holiday in the iron and finishing section for the day to control the situation. At a meeting with the workers later, the management decided to pay Tk 44 a piece of sweater to the workers, police said.

The police station officer-in-charge, Sirajul Islam, said that the workers joined work after the management had agreed to pay Tk 44 a piece of sweater.
